Our story

helping the belmont community since 1992

It became apparent to The Belmont Board of Selectman that the town needed a food pantry in February, 1992 when a resident approached the board expressing the need. While working for the rectory of St. Joseph’s church in Belmont, parishioners approached current food pantry director, Patty Mihelich, desperate for food aid. Originally, residents ventured to surrounding towns such as Lexington and Arlington to food pantries to find food.

Fire Chief Jim Murphy of the Belmont Fire Department offered a section of the basement in the Waverley Fire Station to house the pantry. The space was previously used by the Boy and Explorer Scouts, and the troop volunteered to clean and paint the room in preparation for the pantry. An ad hoc committee consisting of representatives from the Council on Aging, the Religious Council, the business community, the Fire Chief, and three Belmont residents assembled. The committee developed guidelines and began the process of opening the pantry. With the help of the local churches and a small “startup” grant from Project Bread, the Belmont Food Pantry opened its doors on Saturday, December 5, 1992.

In 2005, the Fire Station location was condemned and the building put up for sale. The pantry, however, remained in the building in a non-condemned portion until a new site was available. Through the help of many volunteers, the pantry moved into a modular building located behind Belmont High School, which officially opened on September 3, 2005. The pantry moved yet again in fall of 2009 into the former Belmont Light Department building at 450 Concord Avenue. In April, 2011, Belmont resident & student Clare Sullivan developed this website for the pantry. The pantry returned to the modular building behind the High School on October 6, 2012.

In November 2015, as part of his Eagle Scout badge, Clay Moyles created the official Belmont food Pantry logo. Then, due to space issues at the high school, the food pantry had to move in August 2016. Paul Tocci, Waverley Development, offered his garage at 101 Pleasant Street temporarily till a permanent site was found. On October 29, 2016, the pantry moved to its new location at Mount Hope Church, 51 Lexington Street. In the fall of 2018 the Select Board & Patrice Garvin, Belmont Town Administrator, announced that the Food Pantry was moving into the Town Hall. The Food Pantry opened its doors in the new space in the Town Hall on Saturday, February 2, 2019.

We look forward to seeing you!
